Decision soon on hiring scandals

NELSON Mandela Bay mayor Ben Fihla has given the city's management until Wednesday to decide how to handle recent scandals relating to bus system boss Mhleli Tshamase's criminal record and questions around corporate services head Mod Ndoyana's CV.

Corporate services portfolio head Wandisile Jikeka confirmed that at a meeting last week – just days after The Herald exposed the pair's woes – Fihla ordered a probe into Tshamase's criminal record and Ndoyana's claims that inconsistencies spotted on his CV were "errors".

Both cases raise questions about the effectiveness of the municipality's checks before appointing employees to lucrative and powerful positions.

Jikeka said the mayoral committee would meet on Wednesday, when it was expected to decide on how to handle the matters. "There are internal processes that we are following because all these things must be dealt with," he said.

"We will be in a better position next week to say at what stage we are with the investigation." - Mkhululi Ndamase
