Rezoning meeting postponed

A HUMAN settlements committee meeting meant to discuss rezoning applications in Nelson Mandela Bay was postponed again yesterday, as councillors said they needed more time to verify application details before giving them the green light.

Yesterday's postponement was the second in a row as the committee last sat on July 31, before its chairman, Buyisile Mkavu, was killed the following month.

The postponement means businesses which have applied for rezoning have to wait much longer before they know whether they have the city's blessing to operate.

One of the proposals up for discussion yesterday was Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University's application to build a one-stop facility with student accommodation, lecture halls and computer labs on its Second Avenue campus.

According to the agenda, human settlements executive director Lindile Petuna recommended that councillors approve NMMU's application, with conditions. - Mkhululi Ndamase
