Nehawu to march for better health service

Trade union Nehawu will march for improved service delivery and better working conditions in the health sector, it said on Wednesday (01/10/2014).

"Today the union announces its ongoing public service delivery campaign, where we are demanding immediate action by the provincial administrations and provincial health departments to reverse the decline," the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) said.

Marches would be held across the country on Friday.

Nehawu encouraged its members in the public health sector to provide the best care possible for the sick and elderly.

It called on the Office of Health Standards Compliance to act against health institutions who failed to implement improvements.

"The union wants the people of South Africa to move beyond the prevailing misguided public perceptions about health workers, in particular the nurses as not performing their jobs.

"In reality, many of these workers are serious professionals dedicated to their work, but who, because of under-staffing and bad working conditions, find themselves overwhelmed," Nehawu said.

The union intended working with government in providing solutions to what it called the current health crisis. - Sapa
