War of words over damning Makana report

A WAR of words has erupted in the Makana Municipality over the validity of an independent forensic audit into alleged financial irregularities.

The report – which contains damning findings allegedly implicating ANC politicians and officials in corruption – was commissioned last year by acting municipal manager Mandisi Planga.

The report was delivered to the municipality three months ago and has allegedly been hidden from council ever since.

Although fears have been raised that the report could be swept under the carpet after municipal spokeswoman Yoliswa Ramokolo said it was not commissioned by the ANC-dominated council, DA councillor Brian Fargher insisted the findings be followed up at the highest level.

Fargher also disputed Ramokolo's claims, saying DA councillors recalled Planga being requested in a council meeting late last year to initiate the investigation.

"Planga acted properly, it is just a delay tactic."

He said existing legislation stated any councillor or staff who suspected wrongdoing had a statutory obligation to do something about it – irrespective of approval.

The report, believed to have cost R500000, has still not been paid for by the municipality. - David Macgregor
