Life of Mandela celebrated with song

THE life and times of former president Nelson Mandela will be played out at the Opera House in Port Elizabeth this weekend.

Madiba – The Musical, which is directed by the acclaimed Richard Montez, celebrates the life of Madiba from his childhood in Transkei to his inauguration as the first black president of South Africa.

Madiba's romance with Winnie and life imprisonment for fighting apartheid, forging him into "the leader he was destined to become", also form a core part of the musical.

The music will also reflect the different moods and settings portrayed in the show.

Montez, a performer and choreographer for Disneyland, has acted professionally for 15 years, on stage and on film for television and cinema.

He is also the founder and director of Cornerstone Arts.

"With 20 years of Madiba's efforts of reconciliation, South Africa has come a long way. However, I am staying clear of anything that might be controversial," Montez said.

"I set out not to make one more documentary, but rather a joyous look at his life, his struggles and his victories. I felt that it was fitting and proper to honour the iconic Madiba."

Montez promised a spectacle not to be missed on the show's debut tomorrow.

"The collection of costumes featured is enormous and they are bright and beautiful. The music is equally exciting and fun, and the dances range from jazz to jitterbug, African to hip-hop," he said.

"I have enjoyed being in Port Elizabeth, because there is a lot of talent here. Many of the actors said that this was beyond what they imagined, and were excited to be in such a huge show. I am happy to say I have an amazing cast, and they are all really hard workers. They're giving it their all."

Rene McLeod, who sings and dances in Madiba – The Musical, said Montez was very patient.

"He has a love for the arts and is giving those who don't have the experience the opportunity to be a part of a production of such magnitude," she said.

"I expect a very positive response from the audience. I even got emotional during rehearsals, as it felt so real to me."

There will be one show at 7pm tomorrow and two shows on Saturday – at 1pm and 7pm.

Tickets, at R85, are available from Computicket. - Deon van der Walt
