R250000 maths, science boost for schools

PUPILS at three Eastern Cape high schools are set to receive R250000 worth of study material and computer software as part of an initiative to improve learning and teaching of the critical subjects maths and science.

Molteno's Joe Slovo and Molteno high schools and Sterkstroom's Siyaphakama Senior Secondary School will be the recipients of the maths and science support plan funded by Nordex Education Trust, which is the empowerment arm of the German wind turbine company Nordex.

The initiative will be done in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University's Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Unit which will support the plan's technology blended learning and teaching model.

Nordex SA managing director Anne Henschel said: "As a strategic partner to rural communities in the Eastern Cape, Nordex recognises the need to facilitate skills development in science, commerce, engineering and technology in the region."

The schools will get 18 desktops and seven laptops with TutorTouch software, dataprojectors, scientific calculators and workbooks for each learner in grades 10 to 12. - Zandile Mbabela
