DESPITE the hardships he has endured, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University student Spoxolo Falangile – who was living like a vagrant before Good Samaritans came to his rescue – has managed to beat the odds in his studies.

When he left Port Elizabeth last month to go home for the university holidays, Falangile had little hope that he would be able to continue his academic career.

But now he is back in the city and settling into his new accommodation.

And, he said he had gone to the university on Monday and finally saw his results, which "made me smile" as he had scored above 60% for five of his six modules.

"I'm very happy with my results although there was one module I didn't pass [computers]. I will catch it up though," he said.

His fees at NMMU have been paid up for the year and his results have given him something to smile about.
