Bank 'agrees to probe' in collapsed finance scheme

ONE of the banks that provided financing for the controversial "R699-a-month" car scheme has agreed to conduct a forensic investigation into allegations of fraud in credit applications for the deals, according to a consumer activist acting for the buyers.

Simon Lapping said yesterday he had met the head of Absa's vehicle finance unit, Wessel Steffen, and a team of forensic investigators. "They have agreed to conduct an investigation comparing the verbal contracts and the credit applications received by them."

He said Absa seemed amenable to working out a deal with clients. - Estelle Ellis
