Hearing of ANC four adjourned

THE four Nelson Mandela Bay ANC councillors charged with violating the party's constitution will only get to explain themselves next month after their hearing was adjourned.

The four, Mike Tofile, Lawrence Troon, Zukile Jodwana and Thanduxolo Jacobs, were summoned to appear before the ANC's provincial disciplinary committee at the party's provincial headquarters, Calata House in King William's Town on Sunday.

Among other things, they have been charged with undermining the structures of the ANC and refusing to carry out an instruction of or the mandate of the ANC caucus.

The councillors, with the exception of Troon, did not support an ANC caucus decision to approve the organogram for the metro police as well as a council agenda item relating to the budget for the new force.

On Sunday, only one witness – ANC regional secretary Zandisile Qupe – was called to testify on behalf of the ANC and the hearing was adjourned until next month.

Qupe said yesterday the disciplinary process was "still in progress" and the hearing would continue on a date to be decided upon. - Rochelle de Kock
