Call for Border rugby probe

THE Democratic Alliance has called for a "serious intervention" and investigation into the ailing Border Rugby Union (BRU).

DA spokesman on sport Darren Bergman said he had submitted parliamentary questions to Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula regarding the matter.

"Reports that the Border Rugby Union's continued political interference and poor financial management have led to an untenable crisis at the union require immediate investigation," Bergman said.

He would also send it to public protector Thuli Madonsela's office for further investigation, he said. Bergman said recent allegations that BRU vehicles were used for ANC electioneering also needed to be investigated.

Since early this year the union has been at loggerheads with the union's company, Border Rugby (Pty) Ltd. The union is led by Pumlani Mkolo while the company is led by chief executive Lefty Ngece. The bone of contention was money transfers from Saru which led to several high court applications.

"It is vital that developmental unions such as BRFU remain accountable and deliver on their mandates," Bergman said. - Bongani Fuzile
