Quick action on security after break-ins at museum

THE acting mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Chippa Ngcolomba, called various municipal officials to the Red Location Museum at short notice yesterday to discuss security issues at the iconic site.

This follow's The Herald's report yesterday about a string of thefts and break-ins at the R22-million museum, to which many of the officials were oblivious.

Ngcolomba, along with communications manager Roland Williams and other metro municipal representatives, arrived in New Brighton to have a look at the damage around the building. They questioned security guards and walked along the outside of the building to inspect the damage.

As officials approached the plundered room a group of five young men came rushing out, shouting and laughing as they looked over their shoulders at the stunned security guards.

Upon entering the room the strong smell of dagga hung in the air, and the trespassers hung around outside the museum perimeter while Ngcolomba and his colleagues did their inspections. - Riaan Marais
