Laboratory can't test illegal brew

TESTING delays at police laboratories have made it impossible to identify the ingredients in a potentially lethal homebrew sold in Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth.

Eastern Cape Liquor Board social accountability manager Mgwebi Msiya said yesterday they had been told the alcohol in the brews had broken down before it could be tested because of the long waiting times.

"The explanation I have from the South African Police Service is the fermentation process of the product does not last for more than three days and dispatching of the samples to the Cape Town laboratory for testing and the testing process normally takes longer than that," Msiya said - Estelle Ellis
