Retrenched workers demand answers on trust fund

THIRTEEN years after a trust fund for retrenched Goodyear employees was established, a concerned group of former workers are demanding its financial records.

They claim Sinethemba trustee Dr Siva Pillay has not been transparent and could have misused the funds.

Pillay, however, said the trust had had several meetings with the former workers and that financial statements would be released in another meeting with them today.

The concerned group of six also claimed Pillay used his personal auditors and they were afraid he might cook the books. But Pillay has dismissed this, saying auditors were independent and adhered to the laws which governed them.

The agreement between Goodyear, Numsa and the workers was that R3-million would be divided among the 173 retrenched workers, with an additional R1-million used to skill the former workers. - Mkhululi Ndamase
