CLARKSON Machine Tools claimed the bragging rights with an impressive haul of 97 points as the inaugural PwC Corporate Challenge got off to an auspicious start at Humewood Golf Club on Tuesday.

The challenge was initiated by Humewood and PwC as an opportunity for the region's businesses to network in a social atmosphere, while enjoying some friendly rivalry on one of South Africa's few true links layouts.

Fortunately for the golfers, the course was on its best behaviour with excellent weather, and the four- ball of Ed Harris, Hans van der Linden, Theo Haveman and Eric McAdam took full advantage of the conditions to steamroll the opposition.

They were followed by the PwC fourball of Ryan Stanham, Andries Meiring, Dirk Kotze and Andrea Puggia on 91 points, with the Humewood Golf Club quartet of Ben Ferreira, Alfie Lambson, Justin Smith and Werner Bernhardt cashing in on their intimate knowledge of the links to finish third on 89 points.

Playing a fourball alliance competition, with two to count, the winning fourball dovetailed superbly, with three players netting a final total of under 70.

PwC representative Andrea Puggia said: "This has been a wonderful inaugural competition and we certainly look forward to making this an annual affair and a permanent part of the Humewood and Port Elizabeth golfing calendar."
