Yes to love and respect – but no nose trimmers

With Father's Day being celebrated this Sunday, The Herald asked readers and shop owners in Nelson Mandela Bay what the best and worst Father's Day gifts were. Readers on our Facebook page shared their best and worst gifts, with Catherine Lloydene Wilson offering some great ideas including "a plate with Dad's face on it, a poster or slide show CD, love, breakfast, but most of all LOVE". Another reader said she wished she could give her husband a better job as a Father's Day gift, while Vrey Johan said: "I'm just happy having my boy by me on Father's Day. He is my greatest gift". DLea Stephan said any gift should be welcomed if it was given in a spirit of love while another reader said love and respect should be given to deserving fathers every day, not just on Father's Day. Birch's director Nick Mowbray said favourite Father's Day gifts sold at the popular Newton Park men's outfitters included ties, socks and underwear. "Knitwear and shirts have also been popular. We always have a busy run in the week leading up to Father's Day," Mowbray said. Francarlo Designer Goldsmith Walmer Park executive director Tanya Slabbert said watches were always a firm favourite as a Father's Day gift. "Other items which make great gift ideas are cuff-links, silver bracelets, leather bracelets, the Nomination 'U-Cool' bracelets, as well as the classic nomination bracelet. "Yes, people do generally leave shopping until the last minute, so we are expecting to be nice and busy this weekend." In a recent poll conducted by Pick n Pay, customers said some of the best gifts they had given their fathers in the past ranged from "a big hug, biltong, aftershave, cellphones, tickets to music concerts, golf clubs, an iPad and even a brand new car". Ranked as some of the top gifts were a watch, a surprise visit from an overseas son, a bottle of good wine, a Springbok scarf and a homemade card or a poem. Other items on dads' wish lists were gas braais, power tools, whisky, peace and quiet, obedient children and an iPhone. Rated as the worst gifts ever by Pick n Pay shoppers were soap-on-a-rope followed by melted chocolates, T-shirts that don't fit and the highest possible offence: forgetting the day completely. Other Father's Day no-no gifts listed were flowers, nose hair trimmers, a spade and foot powder. - Cindy Preller
