Grey boys spread the warmth

WITH the cold season upon us, the need for winter warmers is on the increase and Friendly City residents are spreading the warmth – with one school giving jerseys to the less privileged and another receiving beanies and scarves knitted by the elderly.

New Brighton's Phillip Nikiwe Primary School pupils were all smiles last week when bags full of hand-knitted beanies and scarves were handed out at their school, while Grey Junior School pupils donated their sweaters to pupils at the Missionvale Care Centre. Five Grey boys, who were part of the large group that gave up their warm sweaters as they wait for the "cool new Grade 7 2014 hoodies", handed out 150 sweaters to the Missionvale pupils last Tuesday.

This formed part of their "hoody for a hoody" project in which the Grey pupils were taught the value of sharing with those less fortunate.

Hoody project coordinator Nici Lovemore said the project had been worthwhile in raising the pupils' social conscience and they hoped to make it a tradition of the school.

"The boys realised how privileged they were, being able to get new warm clothes ever so often when some children don't even have one piece of warm clothing. This was a very rewarding and enriching experience," she said.

Bay resident Marcelle Wentworth rallied her friends on Facebook two months ago to help her give 311 pupils at Phillip Nikiwe Primary, which she has been helping for the past decade, some much-needed winter woolies. - Zandile Mbabela
