Former 'military' youth group demands benefits

ALMOST 200 Amabutho members staged an all-day sit-in at the ANC regional offices in Nelson Mandela Bay yesterday, demanding housing, jobs and medical support.
The group started their protest at 8am at Florence Matomela House [formerly Standard House] and by late afternoon were still milling around the building, refusing to leave until they had met with the ANC leadership.
Amabutho is a group of former "military" township youth mostly from the Eastern Cape, established in 1985 during the anti-apartheid struggle.
Spokesman Mpumelelo Pongolo said Amabutho was being sidelined for jobs and benefits in Nelson Mandela Bay. - Thulani Gqirana
