Medical dagga trials urged

A TOP researcher has called on the government to allow human trials on medicinal dagga use – especially to assist those with HIV/Aids.

The plea by Professor Charles Parry, director of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit at the Medical Research Council, was published in the latest edition of the South African Medical Journal.

"There are significant gaps in our understanding of the potential benefits and risks associated with the use of [medicinal dagga]."

Parry said one of the issues that hampered research into the safety of legalising the drug for medicinal use was a lack of human trials. - Estelle Ellis
