Plans set to ensure no initiate deaths

WITH just a few weeks left before thousands of boys head to the mountains for the winter initiation season, the Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders (ECHTL) is applying the final touches to its plan to ensure none die during this period.

Last winter season, 40 initiates died in the Eastern Cape.

Since 2006, 401560 boys have undergone the rite, with 496 initiates dying and 221 needing penile amputations, and 251 traditional practitioners being arrested.

In last year's winter season, 14483 boys underwent the rite. Forty died, 24 had a penile amputation and 19 people were arrested.

The ECHTL yesterday expressed confidence about its readiness for the season, which it vowed would be death-free. - Lulamile Feni
