New push for medical aids to cover infertility

THE Infertility Awareness Association of South Africa has renewed its campaign to lobby medical aids to pay for treatment for infertility, saying it is recognised as a disease by the World Health Organisation. The association said medical aids did not cover treatment for infertility despite it being recognised as a disease by the WHO in 2009 and a prescribed minimum benefit disease by the Medical Schemes Act. Ifaasa is still awaiting feedback on a submission it made to the Council of Medical Schemes three years ago in a bid to get medical aids to cover the treatment. - Estelle Ellis
