'Air crash' drama all a mistake

A THREE-HOUR ground and air search was conducted in the mountains near Elands River on the outskirts of Uitenhage last night after a resident claimed to have seen a helicopter crash.

The police helicopter was launched shortly afterwards to do an aerial search of the mountain range, while private and municipal medical service personnel and police officers scoured the terrain for the "crash" site.

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said all response units were deployed.

"It would appear that this incident was a misunderstanding due to the combination of a low-flying helicopter, poor lighting and a fire burning on the mountains," Swart said. - Gareth Wilson and Riaan Marais
