Computers hold up traffic fines

A COMPUTER system to capture traffic speeding fines, which was not operational for about 10 weeks, is up and running again but at a limited capacity as the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality needs new computers.

This means only a limited number of fines can be loaded electronically and sent out to motorists, increasing the metro's already staggering figure of R140-million in outstanding fines.

Also, the metro is unable to recoup any money from speeding fines during the period that the system was not operational unless the offence took place fewer than 30 days ago. - Rochelle de Kock
