Bungle could see Bay write off R22m owed for housing

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality might have to write off R22-million owed by the Eastern Cape Human Settlements Department for RDP houses built by the metro due to a paperwork bungle by city staff.

Bay councillors were fuming yesterday when it was revealed that city manager Mpilo Mbambisa increased the Housing Revolving Fund threshold from R130-million to R145-million, instead of reducing it to the R100- million threshold required by law.

The fund is used to pay housing contractors for projects while the municipality awaits payment from the provincial Human Settlements Department. - Rochelle de Kocka
