It's code red for that extra glass of vino

RED wine may no longer be the guilty pleasure that holds the secret to longevity, cholesterol- control and the fight against cancer, new research has found.

But Nelson Mandela Bay wine aficionado Robin Marten of For the Love of Wine in Stanley Street, Richmond Hill, does not believe that for one second.

"I have always said if you have your five glasses of wine a day you are making a good dent in getting to your daily quota of fruit and veggies," she joked.

The latest 15-year study on the antioxidant resveratrol, published in the Journal of American Medicine, found that drinking copious amounts of red wine made no difference to the longevity or the health of Italian men in the Chianti region.  - Estelle Ellis
