Ex-judo instructor's case postponed

A RETIRED Port Elizabeth judo instructor, accused of molesting some of the boys he coached between 1989 and 2012, appeared in court yesterday, where the matter was postponed for a trial date to be arranged.

The man, 57, has since handed over the reins of his judo club, in an upmarket Port Elizabeth suburb, to his son.

He appeared briefly in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court yesterday. The case was postponed to June 18 for the defence to obtain copies of the docket and for a trial date to be arranged in the regional court.

He is out on warning.

It is alleged the accused, from Cotswold, molested four boys aged between 12 and 18 at the time, while coaching them over a period spanning 23 years.

The latest incident allegedly occurred on a judo tour in East London in 2012. – Kathryn Kimberley
