Schools reopen after promise to boost security

TWO schools in Port Elizabeth's northern areas that closed their doors last week because of the ongoing gang violence in the area have reopened.

Helenvale Primary School principal Malcolm Roberts said teaching had resumed at the school as the Education Department had finally promised to provide the safety measures teachers, parents and pupils had demanded.

This would be done through the Safer Schools Project.

Parents of Helenvale and Hillcrest primary school pupils took to the streets last week, and the week before, to demand armed security officers, security cameras, better fencing and panic buttons. - Alvené du Plessis
