Court told of horrific injuries

THE doctor who conducted the postmortem on a Uitenhage woman who was brutally raped and murdered two years ago told the Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday that she had sustained multiple injuries during the savage attack.

Dr Jan de Beer, a medical officer in forensic pathology based in Graaff-Reinet, said more than one of the injuries that Phumeza Mbewu, 25, sustained could have led to her death. She had multiple injuries including blunt force injuries to her head, bruising around her neck and blood in her trachea and swelling in the brain.

Siphosetu Hempe, 20, and Loyiso Grootboom, 27, of KwaNobuhle, are charged with kidnapping, raping and murdering Mbewu on October 1 2012. - Lee-Anne Butler
