Get metro police rolling – Mthethwa

POLICE Minister Nathi Mthethwa has thrown his weight behind plans by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to establish a metro police service.

The news comes as the municipality is still trying to find the funding for the 900-member force. It is even considering increasing property rates by an additional 1% over the next three years to get the project off the ground.

Mthethwa said yesterday that although plans were under way to absorb all metro police forces into a fully-fledged South African Police Service, the Bay municipality should forge ahead with its plans. - Rochelle de Kock
