Plans for private hospital back on track after six-year legal wrangle

PLANS to build a 120-bed private hospital in Circular Drive, Port Elizabeth are back on track following a Constitutional Court ruling this week.
This comes after six years of legal wrangling, unexplained delays and substantial legal costs.
The justices of the court, in their judgment, called for an explanation on the administrative bungling that caused the drawn-out legal saga, saying the full story of the mysterious behind-the-scenes goings on was not before them. "It is a worrisome feature of this case that political interference appears to have played a role," Justice Johann Fronemann said.
Justice Edwin Cameron said the Eastern Cape Health Department would have to go back to the court now to stop the development. - Estelle Ellis
