‘Grill Master’ has the world atwitter with his dogged style

ALL eyes are on the Oscar Pistorius murder trial as it plays out in the Pretoria High Court, but much of the focus has shifted from the Paralympian to his lawyer, Barry Roux.

Advocate Roux, SC, has become an internet sensation with several Twitter accounts dedicated to him, and parodies of his oldschool ways of cross-examination, and Afrikaans accent, doing the rounds.

Already a household name, Roux is on everyone’s lips, including the likes of celebrities Steve Hofmeyr, Loyiso Gola and puppet Chester Missing, who took to Twitter this week to discuss the “grill master”.

The phrase, “I put it to you”, regularly used by Roux when conducting cross-examination, has gone viral.

Twitter accounts @NotRoux, @Barry_Roux, @RealBarryRoux and @BarryRouxLaw have already gained thousands of followers from across the globe, while rap parodies are gaining popularity on YouTube.

The profile accompanying the account @NotRoux states: “[Prosecutor] Gerrie Nel is my bi***. Terrible memory, cannot remember if I asked a question, so I ask it again.”

The account @Barry_Roux, which purports to be the legitimate account run by Pistorius’s legal team, tweeted yesterday: “I think I’m going to be the one vomiting now. #OscarTrial.”

On Wednesday and yesterday, Roux’s vigorous cross-examination of Colonel Johannes Vermeulen about forensic evidence pertaining to Pistorius’s bathroom door through which he shot model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, remained the subject of debate.

Pistorius maintains he mistook Steenkamp, from Port Elizabeth, for a burglar.

Political puppet Chester Missing tweeted: “Now they have brought a wooden door into court. I told you Roux would crossexamine it, make it feel like a window.”

He said some time later: “Any minute now Roux is going to tell the door it’s lying.”

Comedian Gola tweeted yesterday: “I would tell Roux to stop asking me questions with apartheid English.”

Eyewitness News reporter Alex Eliseev said: “Parents are soon going to start disciplining children with the threat of cross-examination from Roux.”
