MEC to probe deputy mayor's Merc hire bill

LOCAL Government MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane said yesterday he would probe why Nelson Mandela Bay deputy mayor Chippa Ngcolomba was driving a hired Mercedes Benz that cost ratepayers R45000 a month.

This comes after the Herald reported this week that the municipality had been billed about R440000 since November for hired cars and accommodation for some city bosses.

According to invoices from car rental company Avis, speaker Maria Hermans and councillor Thembinkosi Mafana were some of the most frequent users of hired cars, with Ngcolomba leading the pack with the Mercedes Benz, despite having access to two cars used by his predecessors. - Nwabisa Makunga
