Celebration for Women's Day

WOMEN wearing white will gather at the Donkin Reserve tomorrow and release 60 homing pigeons to mark International Women's Day.

The Port Elizabeth branch of Soroptimists International (SIPE) is hosting the "Equality for Women is Progress for all" event.

SIPE president Gail Charalambous will give a speech celebrating and encouraging women's ever-evolving role in society and at home, and acknowledge the efforts of women who were actively involved in the emancipation of women.

"Soroptimists everywhere will continue to lobby governments, inspire change and strive tirelessly for equality and human rights for all," she said. "International Women's Day has championed the achievement of women past, present and future for the past 103 years. I hope the younger generations will continue to build on it." Charalambous said the Donkin Reserve – a memorial site proclaimed in 1820 by city founder Sir Rufane Donkin after the death of his wife Elizabeth – was chosen as it was"a historical symbol of love for a woman".

The event starts at 12.30pm and men are welcome to attend. - Jose Assam
