Bay ahead of Gauteng in violent cities list

NELSON Mandela Bay is more violent than Johannesburg – often considered the most violent city in South Africa – a report on 50 cities around the world has found. But it says Cape Town – with 51 murders per 100000 people – was the most violent city in South Africa last year and 20th most violent in the world.

Nelson Mandela Bay's second position in South Africa – 35.7 murders per 100000 people – placed it at No41 in the world, an improvement on being in 38th position in 2012.

Durban was third with 32.4 murders per 100000 people, while Johannesburg dropped off the rankings last year.

The most violent city in the world, according to the report, is San Pedro Sula, Honduras, with 187 murders per 100000 people.

Caracas in Venezuela and Acapulco in Mexico are next with 134 and 112 per 100000 people, respectively. -
