New US post for Saleem Badat

RHODES University vice-chancellor Dr Saleem Badat will be jetting off to the United States later this year to take up a newly created post at an international foundation that supports South African universities financially.

Badat will become the Andrew W Mellon Foundation's first programme director for international higher education and strategic projects at an unspecified date later this year. He will be based at the foundation's headquarters in Manhattan, New York.

Badat announced this week he was stepping down after eight years as head of Rhodes. In his new job, he will oversee and direct the foundation's ongoing programmes in South Africa as well as grant allocations internationally. - Zandile Mbabela
