No tender process for spray as 'amount not big enough'

THE controversial Immutides spray, canned just days before it was to be given to TB patients in Nelson Mandela Bay as a trial, did not go out to tender.

The spray, which was to be dispensed to patients at New Brighton's Empilweni, Bethelsdorp's Jose Pearson and Uitenhage's Orsmond TB hospitals at the weekend, apparently skipped the tender process because it was "not a big enough amount".

Eastern Cape Health Department boss Dr Thobile Mbengashe said this would form part of the investigation into why district health manager Dr Luleka Mayekiso gave its roll-out to public hospitals the nod.
