Sharing love of Christmas
FRAMESBY Extension resident Arthur Muller has invited people into his home at Christmas for the past 11 years to raise money and goods for those less fortunate.
And this year is no exception.
Muller's Christmas Wonderland is just that, and upon entering his home you will notice a smorgasbord of Christmas decorations and eight elegantly themed trees he has on display this year. It is a labour of love he has worked on since October.
This year Arthur's Wonderland is on display till December 15 from 2pm to 5pm.
Last year he had about 300 people visit his home to see what theme he had come up with. This year Phantom of the Opera was his inspiration.
"Watching an Andrew Lloyd Webber production sparked the idea! The inspiration flowed," said Muller.
Muller and Darrel Lee, his life partner of 19 years, often travel and an international touch is part of his decorative flair. Decorations for the themed trees come from around the world.
"The latest additions, from our travels last year, are from Munich, Prague and Switzerland," said Muller.
He has also received decorations from friends which make the garland decorating the beam very special.
Muller said it started with a Christmas tree competition run by a shop 10 years ago. He won with his Mexican/African themed tree.
"I won the competition four times and allowing people to come and view the entry is what started the Christmas Wonderland showhouse," said Muller.
More than 3600 Christmas lights twinkle in the Muller/Lee home while the Christmas carols play in the background to make you feel so welcome, you do not want to leave.
Muller and Lee said the project was inspired by their love for Christmas and to make people who have forgotten the real meaning behind Christmas aware of it again.
"We should all be putting the Christ back into Christmas."
The joy of giving also plays a part in his effort. The entrance fee is R15 and a toy which will be donated to the Aids Haven – The House of Resurrection.
He says every year he promises himself he is not doing it again but the next year the joy of giving back makes him forget his promises.
Muller said his favourite Christmas decoration was the queen's crown from the Queen's Shop in London. Celine Dion's rendition of Silent Night topped his best carol list and of course his ideal Christmas would be a white one in Europe.
He said they will be off on a trip visiting Austria and Hungary this year but he was also looking forward to a family get-together.
"I hope Austria provides the white Christmas – we will be in Salzburg on Christmas Day."
Before that he is looking forward to an early get-together with friends and family "in our home with music and food".
