Reading quiz winners

THE Phendula Quiz Competition for Port Elizabeth primary schools took place at the NU9 library in Motherwell last month.

Five schools – Fumisikoma, Sanctor, John Masiza, Emafini and Swartkops – took part in the competition for Grade 6 and 7 pupils.

Founder of the competition, Rosemarie Roth, the librarian at St George's Prep School, said:

"I started this competition because I love and enjoy reading. It is so much fun to have a broader knowledge and so the aim of this competition is to encourage young kids to become regulars at the library and read more often."

Each of the schools was represented by 12 pupils who had to read 17 books over the term. The quiz was based on the books.

The quiz was divided into four rounds, and for each round the group which got the most answers correct received a book prize sponsored by Exclusive Books and other bookshops.

The first-round winners were from Motherwell's Fumisikoma Primary.

"I had so much fun in the competition. We all enjoyed it and have learnt a lot. We also want to thank Marianne Terblanche from the library for encouraging us to enter the competition.

"We hope our school will win this competition next year," said Sisipho Sinyongo.

The overall winners were Emafini Primary School from Kwadwesi.
