Memorable rugby in Hankey

THE rugby fest in Hankey on Saturday was a day to remember when two sides from the same club, the Weston Spears, went head to head to decide who would occupy the club's top spot.
The match in Weston Field was organised by the club's president and co-founder, Pastor Lukas Plaatjies.
"I started this club to promote rugby in the area,” said Pastor Lukas.
The teams were made up of players from around the Gamtoos area, from Hankey up to Cambria.
"If one of these teams can play in the Eastern Province league I will be a happy man,” Pastor Lukas said.
The talent was phenomenal as the teams took the game to the next level. They showed determination and are eager to play professionally.
Pastor Lukas and the team's management are planning to register the team with Eastern Province Rugby.
As spectators of all ages came out to support the teams, Pastor Lucas said the team could go very far (with that kind of support).
Some of the older generation expressed their excitement that sport days, especially rugby, are coming back.
Like any other team in previously disadvantaged areas Weston Spears also has its challenges.
"We have asked the municipality to help by fixing the field, but till now there has been no response, ” said assistant coach Fanie van Rooyen.
The field has no lights and water, and the changing room‘s roof is collapsing.
"We also struggle with sponsors,” said Van Rooyen.
