Lorraine on the watch
THE Lorraine Neighbourhood Watch recently held a highly successful crime prevention operation in the Lorraine area.
The operation was dubbed "Operation 100” to encourage 100 members of the community to participate.
"Although we fell short of the magical 100, we had 55 members of the community participating,” said Lorraine Neighbourhood Watch chairman Glenn Scheepers.
The planning of the operation was done by Walmer SAPS, with members from SAPS including traffic officials, security companies and Neighbourhood Watch patrollers and members of the community participating.
Scheepers said the aim was three-fold:
crime prevention operation;
a show of force and
a drive to recruit members for the watch.
The operation continued throughout the night and the highlight was the surveillance of the area by the SAPS helicopter.
"The metro surveillance vehicle also participated and was parked at a strategic point during the operation. We don’t believe any residents or criminals were aware that the area was under surveillance throughout the operation,” said Scheepers.
He said Facebook sites were abuzz with all the activities of the night in the Lorraine area including negative commenting on the high fuel cost and disturbance the helicopter caused.
"Due to the success of the operation, the Lorraine Neighbourhood Watch will be organising these crime prevention operations on a regular basis.
