Lap top tables make studying easier

SEEING a student in a wheelchair struggling to balance her notebook and file on her lap inspired NMMU Second Avenue Campus tourism lecturer Gary Fisher to come up with a solution – lightweight lap tables.
"Some of the lecture theatres on campus have special desks for students in wheelchairs, but that particular venue does not," said the Providentia resident.
The DIY-enthusiast had some leftover laminated floorboards at home – and quickly glued a few together to create the lap tables for Second Avenue Campus's three wheelchair-using students. "The tables are light, neat and look good. Each one took me all of two minutes to make."Accounting student Vuyelwa Majova was delighted with her lap table, saying it made her life much easier by enabling her to study in bed and keep her feet warm.
Three years ago, Fisher was in a car accident which left him wheelchair bound.
"I can understand the students' frustrations," he said.
