Classroom a big step for little feet

IT was a day of tears, cheers and feigned bravery at Nelson Mandela Bay primary schools yesterday as the little ones had to put on their big school caps for their first day of formal schooling.


While some screeched in excitement about finally starting "big school", others sobbed pitifully as their parents dropped them off in their classrooms.


Clutching his R2 lunch money shortly before 9am, Zwide's Mnqophiso Primary School Grade R pupil Athenkosi Mtimkulu, 5, cried: "I want to buy chips and I want to buy them now."


Junior Mabogola, 5, who started Grade R at Victoria Park Grey in Walmer, had been nagging his parents about school since before Christmas. "I'm looking forward to school and passing all my grades."
