Christmas observances as diverse as SA’s rainbow

SOUTH Africa is synonymous with diversity, and the country’s cultural pluralism is also reflected in how Christmas is celebrated under its rainbow of rituals and traditions.

For Imelda, 67, and Lawrence Augustine, 69, Christmas is about reflecting on the birth of Jesus Christ.

Damon Leff, 48, of George, does not celebrate the holiday. “As a pagan I do not celebrate Christmas, but I do celebrate Yule – a pagan forerunner to Christmas – in June at the winter solstice. All pagan religious holidays are seasonally timed.”
