THREE Eastern Cape residents who have dedicated their lives to serving their communities were honoured at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Prestige Council Awards last night.

Former Alpha Primary School teacher Tennyson Mackay joined cricketer Makhaya Ntini and community leader Nontobeko Moletsane at the glitzy ceremony at the Boardwalk International Convention Centre.

Mackay, 87, started teaching in 1945 and taught at schools around the Eastern and Western Cape. He joined Alpha Primary in Gelvandale in 1961 and stayed until his retirement.

Mackay introduced music at the school, with the choir gaining popularity over the years. He also trained boys to box at the Toynbee Club in Gelvandale.
