Hoping to follow in Madiba’s footsteps

TO the world he was one of the greatest heroes of this century, but to Mayibuye Mandela, Madiba was simply the great-grandfather who teased him constantly about his shaved head.

Remembering iconic statesman Nelson Mandela yesterday, Mayibuye said Madiba would laugh as he asked him how his head coped with the Qunu breeze.

“My greatest memory will be the jokes we shared. Most of them were about my shaved head. He always found that funny. It always used to make him laugh,” he said during an interview yesterday.

Mayibuye was at Mvezo Great Place in Transkei – a stone’s throw away from the house Madiba was born in 95 years ago. He appeared tired but seemed pleased to talk about his great-grandfather.
