Fresh interest in ‘Madiba shirts’

NELSON Mandela loved Eastern Cape- born fashion designer Sonwabile Ndamase’s shirts so much he wore them almost every day for two decades.

Now, following his death last Thursday, orders for the “Madiba shirt” as they were lovingly called, are streaming in. Even US musician Maxwell, who performed in the country at the weekend as part of his live tour, ordered shirts for his entire crew.

In addition to dressing the Grammy Award-winning soul singer, Ndamase said he was designing a “very special” shirt for Madiba’s eldest grandson, Mandla, to wear to tomorrow’s memorial service.

“When Maxwell put the shirt on he said he felt connected to the Motherland,” Ndamase said. “First he ordered six, but then he came back and asked for two more. He ordered shirts for his entire crew.”
