NELSON Mandela was a committed Methodist all his life and was always grateful for the church’s role in the fight against apartheid.
This is according to a Uitenhage church leader who corresponded with Mandela while he was in prison.
Former Methodist Church of South Africa president the Rev Dr Simon Gqubule received his first letter from Mandela when he was elected leader of the church.
“In 1980 I was elected president of the Methodist Church and I got a letter from Mandela, which I really did not expect. He was congratulating me on my appointment, and he was doing that as a Methodist. From then on, we corresponded.
