EVERY morning Ronnie Gololo leaves home at 6am to get to work earlier to cook for his roads and stormwater department colleagues, all before his actual work day for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality begins.

Gololo has also started a vegetable garden at the municipality’s Motherwell depot, where he grows all the ingredients for their daily meals.

This has earned him the title of star municipal employee at the Bay Star Awards hosted by mayor Ben Fihla on Tuesday night.

Gololo bagged R20000 in cash – plus prizes worth R21000 – at the awards, aimed at celebrating municipal employee excellence.

Gololo, 53, an artisan at the Motherwell roads and stormwater depot for the past 20 years, won awards in three categories – the individual award, the humanitarian award and the overall Bay Star award.
