Man in court after police chase in PE

A MAN appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with his alleged involvement in a car chase through the city during the early hours of Saturday.

Police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said Andries Smit made a brief court appearance. He is charged with attempted murder, theft of a motor vehicle and reckless and negligent driving.

According to Janse van Rensburg, Smit allegedly attempted to ram a police vehicle twice during the chase, which started in New Brighton and ended in Strand Street in the city centre.

He will remain in custody until his next appearance on December 9. – Lee-Anne Butler
