PE doctors caught in web of intrigue over rape, extortion claims

Kathryn Kimberley

ALLEGATIONS of sexual abuse, extortion and a dramatic cover- up were made yesterday when two doctors appeared in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court. One doctor is accused of raping his patient, while the other is accused of trying to cover up for his friend by trying to convince the complainant not to press charges.

Dr Nasiev Syed, 49, of Malabar, pleaded not guilty to a charge of rape, while Dr Mohammed Bhatti, 54, of Glendinningvale, pleaded not guilty to defeating the ends of justice.

The complainant, a 35-year-old woman who cannot be named, alleges Syed sexually assaulted her while examining her for a possible urinary tract infection at his private Bethelsdorp practice in September 2010.

She also alleges he forced her to touch his genitals.
