RELIGIOUS leaders could not live as if nothing was happening when so much was falling apart in the country, Professor Barney Pityana said at the “Theology of Voting” consultation in New Brighton yesterday.
The Grahamstown College of Transfiguration rector was guest speaker at the Nelson Mandela Bay Consultation of Christian Churches held at the Douglas Mbopa Memorial Hall at St Stephen’s Anglican Church.
Pityana said inequality and poverty did not promote goodness in South Africa.
“It has been said that poverty is the worst of crimes, and it is not the poor who are criminals. The criminals are those who make others poor, because they will not share and keep too much … to boost their own pockets.
